The Orlov Diamond - the most famous diamonds from Tamil Nadu

The Orlov Diamond is 189.62ct ina dome shape with a faint green hint. Today it is symbol of failed romance.

It has once served as the eye of a Hindu God statue in a temple in Tamil Nadu. The legend says that it has been stolen by a French soldier during the 18th century. After a journey from one seller to another it ended up in the possession of Grigory Grigoryevich Orlov, a Russian count.

Orlov has been a secret lover to Catherine the Great of Russia with whom he had an illegitimate child. Catherine left Orlov for a Russian Prince and the cOunt Orlov, being heartbroken, offered the diamond in an attempt to win his beloved one back. Catherine the Great of Russia accepted the gesture and had the diamond set in her royal scepter but Orlov’s affections towards hr remained unanswered. Today, the Orlov diamond is Orlov is part of the Kremlin Diamond Fund, an exhibit in Moscowshowcasing Russia's crown jewels.
